RESEARCH & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
Inspect the design
Identify intended use, sampling, known outcomes, blinding, replication and test difficulty. Consider whether observations are independent or repeated measurements from the same source.
Inspect the denominator
Ask which tests were included, excluded or classified as inconclusive. Different counting rules can change apparent performance; the rules should be transparent.
Inspect uncertainty
Performance estimates need an uncertainty account and an explanation of where the study does and does not support generalization. Use the validation planning checklist to structure a review.
Worked example: testing the easy cases
Suppose a proposed comparison study selects only clear, complete reference material. The results may describe performance under those conditions. They do not establish how a method handles partial, degraded or ambiguous material. The research question should identify whether such conditions belong in scope and how they will be sampled, rather than add them only after a favorable result is obtained.
Denominators and decision categories
Record how the study counts correct results, errors, inconclusive decisions and exclusions. Different handling can change the apparent performance, so a headline rate needs its definition. Examine whether observations are independent and whether reference labels are certain. Uncertainty estimates should be appropriate to the design rather than copied from a simpler analysis that assumes different data.
From evidence to an intended use
Compare the validation conditions with the material, users and environment of the proposed use. Identify what transfers and what remains untested. Document changes in versions, thresholds or procedures and their review needs. The planning tool supports this comparison, but the scientific conclusion must come from a conducted study and reviewed results, not from ticking its items.
